Mission Trip to Navajo Nation Extends National Vision's Impact Across the U.S.
in Giving Back Hear from Our Doctors
At National Vision, we’re on a mission to make a difference in the world by providing the gift of sight. We live out this mission in our own communities each day, and our philanthropic efforts ensure that we extend this mission to meet the critical vision needs of communities in need. That includes supporting and empowering doctors in the National Vision Doctor of Optometry network to give back outside of the exam lane.
In January 2024, Robert Moen, O.D., who practices alongside Eyeglass World with Doctor's Exchange of Arizona, P.C., embarked on a mission trip coordinated by a non-profit organization to address the overwhelming eye care needs of the Navajo Nation. This underserved community has faced significant healthcare challenges, especially following the COVID-19 pandemic, and Indian Health Services have struggled to meet the growing demand for essential services like eye care. Dr. Moen stepped in to help fill this gap, conducting 700 eye exams, many of which revealed a need for corrective eyewear. Dr. Moen was also able to fill existing prescriptions for many patients who had previously been unable to fill them.
“When asked if they wore glasses, a common response was that they had a pair 5-10 years ago,” said Dr. Moen. “We set up a clinic at a school and the children were very eager and excited to wear glasses. I am so pleased to be affiliated with a company that so willingly gives back to our society, and supports its affiliated network of doctors in doing so. I am proud to practice alongside the Eyeglass World Team where we all contribute to make a difference.”
This trip was part of National Vision's ongoing support to eye care mission trips, most often through Volunteer Optometric Services to Humanity/International (VOSH) and Student Volunteer Optometric Services to Humanity (SVOSH), and sometimes through other organizations by way of the voluntarism of an affiliated optometrist like Dr. Moen. Our support includes donating frames, readers and sunglasses, as well as loaning or donating optometric equipment to volunteers.
So far this year, National Vision has supported more than 60 mission trips in 25 countries including Kenya, South Sudan, Vietnam, Micronesia, as well as in cities throughout America.
As one of the largest optical companies in the United States, we believe we have the responsibility and unique capability to make the world a better place. We are proud to celebrate our affiliated doctors and team members who go above and beyond in living out this responsibility each day.
